Prompted by the difficulties associated with measuring classroom instructional practices, beyond value-added test score gains and resource-intensive observational measures, the authors developed and are working toward validating the ATOMS Science Instructional Log for large-scale evaluative purposes. This instrument, completed by elementary classroom teachers, is an outcome measure used to capture reformed-based instructional practice (as specified in the Next Generation Science Standards, National Research Council’s A Framework for K-12 Science Education, and the goals of a university teacher preparation program).
