How Differential Treatment Shapes Schooling

Sat, April 5, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Terrace IV

Abstract

In this study, individuals who emerged from public schools with limited literacy retrospectively reflect on their situations within education systems. Herein adult literacy learners share their views and interpretations of public education and offer their answers to the question: Why do so many emerge from public schools with limited literacy? An unanticipated answer to the question is that differential treatment in public schools interferes with learning and general well being of students, which manifests in much the same way as social inequality in the larger society.
