This study explores descriptions, perceptions, and illustrations of the needs of young children to examine the nature of educating young children in a rural Tanzanian village from the voices of decision-makers and people who care for young children. This study sheds light on how local conceptions of children and their needs are understood and how that informs the enactment of educating young children and for what end. Using a single case study design to examine informal and formal education of young children in rural Tanzania, I collected data including document analysis and semi-structured interviews with students, teachers, parents, and village members. Findings address the multiple purposes and adaptations of educating young children in a rural Tanzanian village.
