No Child Left Behind’s Effects on Teachers’ Perceptions, Satisfaction, and Career Intentions

Fri, April 4, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Terrace IV

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to measure whether teachers’ workplace perceptions, career satisfaction, and career intentions changed from pre-to post-NCLB as well as to examine whether these outcome variables changed simply in the post-NCLB period from 2003-2007. Teachers in the Schools and Staffing Survey sample were grouped according to their states’ pre-NCLB accountability policies and student proficiency standards. Using linear regression models, teachers’ responses from select years during the 1987-2007 timeframe were analyzed. Results suggest that those in states with strong pre-NCLB accountability and high student proficiency standards and those with weak pre-NCLB accountability and low student proficiency experienced the greatest changes in conjunction with the law’s enactment.
