This paper presents an example of design-based research that illuminates the role that place-based education can play in supporting culturally relevant mathematics pedagogy. In particular, this paper examines how mobile technologies can facilitate opportunities for critical mathematical analysis of a local phenomenon. A 15-session program on the subject of the state lottery was designed for high school students to derive the probability of winning lottery games, conduct interviews with community members, and analyze patterns on lottery spending across neighborhoods using interactive maps. A pilot of the program in a low-income, urban neighborhood reveals that this curriculum that investigates a local phenomenon with an emphasis on connecting to students’ experiences teaches mathematics for understanding and provides opportunities for critical thinking with mathematics.
