The intercollegiate athletic subculture knows very little about social media use by students-athletes. Athletic department administrators, conference commissioners, and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) who are in charge of creating new policies lack meaningful data to help negotiate new policies. This lack of data also exists regarding how student-athlete’s manage their private information on social media.
This quantitative study provides athletic department personnel with support for understanding Division I student-athlete use of social media. Those university athletic officials who are concerned with creating and implementing a social media policy will be able to utilize the information to better inform policy decisions.
