Transfer students encounter academic and social challenges transitioning to a 4-year institution. Failure to provide support programs specifically tailored to address the unique needs of first-year transfer students may delay degree attainment, and negatively affect student persistence. This interview study evaluates the post-transfer experience of students enrolled in a Transfer Student Success Course (TSSC) to non-enrolled counterparts at a large research institution. The purpose of this study is to identify components of effective transfer-student support programs, examine motivating factors for enrolling in the TSSC, and (3) shed light on transfer student stereotypes and/or the types of microaggressions directed at transfer students. Results of this study can be used to inform transfer student support services at 4-year institutions.
