“But I Wasn’t Even Acting Black”: Internalized Racial Microaggressions Among Black High School Students

Thu, April 3, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Terrace IV

Abstract

Black students who had documented instances of disciplinary consequences were identified and asked to participate in a series of interviews including a vignette interview and a Critical Incident Technique interview. Through those interviews, the lived experiences of those students were explored and the extent to which the student-participants perceived their race to be a factor in those experiences was considered. This paper discusses one key finding of the study: the way in which the participant responses demonstrated a pattern of internalized racial microaggressions.
