Toward the Deconstruction of the So-Called Achievement Gap

Mon, April 7, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Terrace IV

Abstract

The term, Achievement Gap remains a misnomer to many educational researchers. Yet, the term continues to circulate nationally to the chagrin of those interested in and committed to social justice in educational endeavors. This paper suggests that part of the confusion over the term is born from a stubborn refusal to accept the causes of the differences in academic attainment among groups and from a national refusal to engage in meaningful discussions about race and equity in education.
