Inside and Outside the Ziploc Bag of Traditional Teacher Education: A Professor and Student Dialogue With Freire, Their Research, and Each Other

Sun, April 6, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Terrace IV

Abstract

This presentation is a dialogue between a teacher educator and teacher candidate from the same traditional teacher education program in the United States. Our session has two aims: first, to tell our research stories about teacher education in the United States and Chile in order to re-imagine the ways in which Freire’s pedagogy of freedom might be embodied inside—and outside—teacher education programs. Second, to foster dialogue with the session participants around questions such as: In what ways does teacher education in the United States limit and/or inspire the critical imaginations of its participants? What can we learn from our experiences outside of traditional teacher education that might transform our pedagogies within it?
