Fostering Science Education Innovation Through a School/University Collaboration: A Case Study

Abstract

This case study explores the culture of a science education partnership between university scientists and a school district that resulted in innovative high school science programs, engagement of diverse students, sustainability of the programs and partnership, and mutual learning. The programs were created within the context of the district curriculum with teachers and scientists collaborating and co-teaching. Elements that fostered innovation were the sense of mutuality and equity, the strength of community building, and effective infrastructure that created understanding and sustainability. Both the school district and the university gained from the collaboration, especially during the Great Recession and its aftermath, and most importantly so did students. This case demonstrates the viability of a mutual learning model in scientist-school collaborations.
