Conceptualizations of Male African American National Board Certified Teachers

Abstract

There continues to be limited contributions from African American male teachers as leaders in the profession or as prominent voices to inform accomplished teaching practices. There are also limited opportunities to share their dispositions as experts and leaders. To date, over 100,000 teachers have achieved National Board Certification, with less than 250 identified as African American male. This investigation collected the lived experiences of male African American National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) and their stories as evidence of their learning, leading, socialization, and cultural connections. Participants completed in-depth, face-to-face, interviews. The findings show these teacher leaders have a strong sense of identify, a commitment to “giving back”, and trusted advocates grounded in education as a continuum.
