Disrupting Segregation in Computer Science Education: Researching How to Teach Computer Science to All Students

Sat, April 5, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Convention Center, Floor: 200 Level, Hall E

Abstract

Exploring Computer Science (ECS) is an NSF-developed educational reform program committed to democratizing computer science knowledge at the high school level. ECS was created in response to research revealing great disparities in learning opportunities falling along racial, gender, and socioeconomic lines. This paper will present preliminary findings from a set of nine ethnographic case studies that, together, paint a mosaic of the characteristics of ECS classroom teaching and learning teaching practices that have led to more equitable participation in high school computing classrooms. At this moment in time of accelerated attention to K-12 computing education, this research is ripe to inform innovative policies and practices that lead to broadened participation in computing.
