In Event: Roundtable Session 23
In Roundtable Session: Arab and Muslim Experiences in School Contexts
The purpose of this qualitative study is to explore the intersection of race and religion in the educational experiences of immigrant Sudanese Muslim women in the U. S. The overarching question was “How do immigrant Sudanese Muslim women perceive their educational experiences in America, and how their race and religion the impact these experiences?” I used Black feminist epistemology, and narrative inquiry as a method for data collection and analysis. Data analysis revealed that, the participants encountered series of discrimination and prejudice due to their race, religion, accented English, and immigrant status. They as well revealed that intersection of these categories of discrimination. However, the participants’ stories reflected their resiliency and determination which helped them achieving success academically and professionally.
