Recommendations Versus Reality: Examining Parental Engagement and School-Parent Compacts in a Low-Income Community

Fri, April 4, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Convention Center, Floor: 100 Level, 104B

Abstract

School districts with Title 1 funding must create school-parent compacts, which outline their vision for home-school partnerships. This paper will examine the parent component of school-parent compacts across two school districts within a low-income community. The content of the compacts were analyzed, as well as parent definitions of engagement and sources of motivation related to parental engagement behaviors. This paper will explore content and overlap within school-based and parent-based definitions of engagement, as well as factors that may contribute to parental engagement as conceptualized by the school.
