Using Social Network Analysis to Measure Learners’ Participation in Facebook Discussion

Abstract

There is growing interests on Social Network Services (SNS) and many college courses use SNS as discussion environments. Accordingly there has been an explosion of interest in using Social Network Analysis (SNA) to assess participation of students in on-line discussions. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate interchangeably using respective result through quantitative method and SNA. This paper analyzes students’ participation in Facebook discussion with three different methods and compares them with the results of MANOVAs. Also, densities and visuals based on closeness centrality are compared according to experimental treatments. More detailed results and implications will be presented in the session.
