Abstract

The aim of this paper is to explore, using a qualitative, reflexive approach, the use of digital and visual media with young children to capture their perceptions, visions, and understandings of school-based play spaces as they act as both researcher and artist. Through a participatory design, this research examines three-, four-, & five-year-olds’ experiences participating in a media-driven exploration of indoor and outdoor play spaces at a university campus child care center. The findings of this research contribute to the growing body or literature that seeks to understand the child as co-constructor of knowledge, culture, and identity while also providing insight into the child as creator and consumer of visual and electronic imagery.
