Abstract

The Proficiency-based Assessment and Reassessment of Learning Outcomes (PARLO) system allows repeated assessment of high-valued learning outcomes through a proficiency- (or standards-) based model. It promotes student-centered learning and repeated opportunities and modalities demonstrate learning by rewarding real understanding and learning rather than passing students due solely to class attendance. This system has transformed teacher experiences and changed attitudes of both students and teachers. Ongoing analysis reveals that the PARLO system had a positive impact on student learning, as measured by content examinations given both pre- and post- implementation as compared to a control group of students, in particular for those students who had performed well on 8th grade high-stakes, state-wide assessment examinations.
