Linking School and Community: An Examination of Parental Practices in a Latino Farmworking Community

Abstract

​This qualitative study documents the experiences of farmworking parents with the local school system. More specifically, this investigation examines what are the barriers that parents’ perceive to their children’s education and the strategies parents employed to promote higher education. This study is nested in a community-based research approach that employs a community-university partnership to promote educational attainment in a farmworking community. The data for this study was collected through parent workshops discussions. This study employs a community-cultural wealth framework to examine the ways parents activate the different capitals to navigate the local school system and engage in their children's education.
