The presenter uses survey data from a longitudinal national database and from a California Central Valley study to compare and shed light on Latino family characteristics and other factors that are associated with access to Higher Education for first generation college students. The results are presented along with qualitative data results from directed focus groups that showcase specific strategies, resources and assets adopted by Latino parents to support student’s aspirations to attend college. The study extends the idea of parental investment and highlights characteristics and practices that contribute to parent’s efforts to support their children aspirations to higher education.
