IDEA mandates that students with disabilities are involved and progress in the general curriculum, are provided supplementary aids and services, and are educated with their nondisabled peers to the maximum extent appropriate. Special education teachers must be highly qualified under this mandate. This research is a systematic review of the last 20 years of 17 content area journals of professional organizations (NCTM, NCTE, NCSS, and NSTA) to identify and analyze the research related to disability. To date there has been no review of the research related to disability in general education journals, and this highlights the need for disability to be represented in content area literature to improve the educational outcomes of students with disabilities.
