Beyond Drill and Kill: New Directions for After-School Programs

Sun, April 6, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Convention Center, Floor: 200 Level, Hall E

Abstract

The present study examines the viability of a tutoring and mentoring (T&M) program focusing on homework help for English learners (ELs). The program features collaboration between an elementary school in a low income community and a large land grant university in the southeast. Authors utilize program data to determine how the T&M program affected students in terms of academics, sense of school belonging, and self-concept. Participants outperformed their school's ELs in Math and were comparable in Language Arts and Reading. Conversely, students exhibited a lower sense of school belonging, and self-concept compared to a matched sample. Authors discuss implications and alternative future directions for the T&M program.
