The literature on public pedagogy often seems to exist more as a collection tied together by the alliterative phrase than by distinct epistemological, theoretical, empirical, or definitional threads. Prior investigations have concluded with calls for future research and theorizing that consciously considers the ways education operates in non-institutional spaces and phenomena, with specific around the lack of theoretical clarity that pervades public pedagogy scholarship. With these problematics in mind, our purpose in this paper is to share the results of a focused literature review intended to clarify the concept of pedagogy within literature on public pedagogy and gain a more coherent understanding of how scholars have conceptualized the mechanisms and processes that characterize pedagogies within broader cultural settings.
