Use of student growth models for educator evaluation is all the rage within the policy world. This study uses the tenants of consequential validity as a framework for examining educators’ perceptions of the use of student growth models for educator evaluation. Quantitative and qualitative survey data from a large, diverse district in North Carolina suggest multiple and substantive concerns regarding fairness, meaningfulness, transparency, utility, and social consequences regarding the use of student growth models for educator evaluation. Implications for policy are considered, including the role of research to guide and redirect innovative policy efforts.
