Pedagogy for the Connected Science Classroom: Computer-Supported Collaborative Science and the Next-Generation Science Standards

Abstract

Computer Supported Collaborative Science (CSCS) is an ongoing research project designed to train science teachers in how to make effective use of online collaboration tools. For the past four years, faculty from the Cal State Northridge (CSUN) have worked with science teachers on how to use tools such as Google Docs to enable students to share data and ideas online. The purpose of this paper is threefold. First, this paper provides a theoretical basis for CSCS pedagogy. Second, we articulate five key CSCS principles of instruction that take advantage of collaborative tools. Third, we use the eight Science & Engineering Practices identified by the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) as a structure for describing the CSCS pedagogy of collaboration.
