Intellectual Work in a Beginning Teacher’s Experience

Sun, April 6, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Convention Center, Floor: 100 Level, 112A

Abstract

This research inquires into the experiences of two beginning teachers with a particular focus on the ways intellectual work is represented in their lives as an experience of identity making. Specifically, inquiry is made into the ways decision-making and reflective thought are engaged when dilemmas arise in collision with the grand narrative of school, when it interacts with the narratives of others, and with the narratives of the self. Moments of interaction are foregrounded in order to understand how intellectual work shapes a beginning teacher’s identity.
