Asian Faculty’s Roles and Job Satisfaction in U.S. Academia

Abstract

Through the national faculty data of the National Center for Education Statistics, this study attempted to gain a greater understanding about Asian faculty as a group and to provide important insights into Asian faculty’s satisfaction and primary roles. Asian faculty tended to be relatively well represented in research; in other words, they are contributing to knowledge production or scholarly activities in U.S. academia. The results of multiple statistical analyses reveal that regardless of foreign-born status, income, age, or gender, Asian faculty have a significantly lower level of overall job satisfaction, compared with other racial groups; in fact, they are the lowest among all racial groups.
