Using Critical Community Engagement in Graduate Education to Prepare Future Health Care Professionals

Abstract

This study evaluated the use of a critical community engagement project that was part of a professional development course for Physician Assistants. The project provided opportunities for pre-clinical students to engage with their community and learn how to support members of underserved populations in a meaningful way. Students used problem-posing and authentic reflection to develop collaborative relationships with community agencies while examining ethical issues and honing professional core competencies. This study considers the strengths and limitations of implementing a year-long community engagement project at the graduate level.
