Kenya Quaker School Peace Curriculum Pilot Project Implementation: A Case Study of Successes and Challenges

Fri, April 4, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Convention Center, Floor: 100 Level, 105A

Abstract

The development of the Curriculum for Peace and Conflict Management for the Quaker secondary schools in Kenya was a response to the effects of the 2008 post-election violence. The first edition of the peace curriculum contains eight major themes addressing the specific Kenyan cultural needs involving peace in society. The primary purpose of this study was to evaluate the level of the peace curriculum implementation one year after the training sessions and identify success and challenges with the implementation. The results of this study show that mixed day schools and boys’ boarding schools lead the way in the higher levels of implementation. This study also supports research which shows that principals are integral to cultural change initiatives within schools.
