Although the potential of digital games as instructional resources is well known, researchers also acknowledge that the transfer from the realm of games to the realm of formal disciplines is challenging. This paper discusses seven case studies of learning procedures in solving linear equations in algebra by students as they played the award-winning multiplatform commercial game Dragon Box 5+, created by We Want to Know. The transfer from procedures in the game to algebraic procedures is explored as a case of analogical reasoning, specifically addressing issues of retrieval, evaluation of inferences, and the role of prior knowledge in these processes.
