This paper explores the intersection of social justice, culturally responsive practice, and closing the achievement gap from an educational leadership perspective. This project is part of a larger, ongoing study of 13 schools in Oregon that have been recognized by the State Department of Education for their progress in closing the achievement gap. The authors focus on interview data from 16 school leaders and have analyzed a subset of codes specifically related to issues of social justice. Drawing on the interview data, the authors propose a model for understanding the developmental process of leadership that includes awareness, reflection, and action, which lead to acts of social justice.
