Using the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) data from the school years 2007-08 through 2010-11, we explore charter school effects and find the evidence of the positive effects of charter schools for the middle school level. However, inconsistent estimates from the various empirical strategies suggest that the substantive results are sensitive to the selection of the covariates to condition on and decision on the matching techniques. Our estimates also reveal an important heterogeneity of the charter school effects by start type. The heterogeneity of the charter school effects would be worthy to explore in depth, given the history and expansion of the LAUSD charter schools.
