Given the underrepresentation of African-American males in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), it is imperative to examine the effectiveness of STEM programs aiming to increase preparation. This mixed-methods study examines the impact of a culturally relevant STEM intervention program on STEM achievement, attitudes, and aspirations among 27 African-American male adolescents. Using a pre-post design, students were evaluated with a survey instrument, focus groups, and course assessments. Results revealed that this intervention significantly increased mathematics and technology knowledge, access to diverse STEM role models and networks of STEM peers, STEM college and career aspirations, and significantly decreased perceptions of STEM barriers and endorsement of negative STEM racial stereotypes. This research informs strategies for improving STEM opportunities for African-American males.
