“Transmedia play” refers to a broad set of media consumption and production practices through which people experience transmedia stories. Transmedia stories are complex stories that unfold across multiple media (e.g. books, television programs, video games, etc.). This paper draws connections between five characteristics and three design principles for transmedia play (Herr-Stephenson, Alper, Reilly, & Jenkins, 2013) and potential uses of transmedia for teaching about social justice and ameliorating issues related to gaps in participation with new technologies. The paper presents examples of teaching for social justice drawn from a close reading of the Harry Potter transmedia world.
