The purpose of this study was to examine the structural relations among personality, goal orientation, self-handicapping and academic engagement. One-hundred and thirty college students completed instruments assessing personality(conscientiousness, perfectionism,), goal orientation(growth-seeking, validation -seeking), academic engagement and self-handicapping. Structural analyses showed that Conscientiousness contributed positively to growth-seeking while perfectionism contributed positively to validation-seeking, growth-seeking predicted engagement while validation-seeking predicted self-handicapping. Tests for mediation showed that growth-seeking mediated the direct effect conscientiousness had on academic engagement, while validation-seeking mediated the direct effect perfectionism had on self-handicapping.
