Mon, April 7, 8:15 to 9:45am, Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Terrace IV

Abstract

Blended learning (BL) has been part of adult education since late 1990s (Glass & Welner, 2011). Recently, elementary and middle schools started to adopt BL to change the role of students and teachers, to cut cost of teaching staff, and to improve student outcomes at the era of high pressure accountability policies. In this paper, we investigate the use of Khan Academy, an online math instruction program, to personalize math instruction at elementary and middle schools experimenting blended learning to replace traditional direct instruction. In this qualitative study, we profile multiple schools in a case study format to investigate how Khan Academy model of personalizing math instruction changes learning and affects student outcomes.
