Thu, April 3, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Convention Center, Floor: 200 Level, Hall E

Abstract

This study examines the work of the Lumina Project –which is a three year initiative of the UCLA Black Male Institute focusing on the retention and campus experiences of African American males at UCLA. The project is grounded in both quantitative and qualitative analysis to address African American male retention on the campus. The study highlights the trends in collective experiences, examines programmatic approaches, and highlights the impact of participation in an annual “Blacklimated” Course for 1st year, transfer, and non-traditional African American males at UCLA. This session particularly benefits student affairs officers, retention-based program administrators, academic advisors, and anyone interested in the retention of African American males specifically at predominately White institutions (PWIs), but all post-secondary institutions as well.
