We proposed and validated a new individual difference in learning and motivation, motivational dispositions: challenge and safety orientation. These motivational dispositions represent an individual variability in the underlying motivational neurological network determining behavioral and motivational reactivity toward external stimuli. In Study 1, we validated the motivational disposition scales by comparing them with the key existing scales in terms of their predictive roles. In Study 2, we conducted an experiment to demonstrate the associations between the motivational dispositions and individuals’ actual choice behaviors in learning situations.
