Whānau participating in the Aotearoa New Zealand education system experience transitions between early childhood education, primary (elementary) school, high school and beyond that support their Māori language aspirations and learning continuity with varying degrees of success. This paper focuses on whānau experiences as they are preparing to transition from one education setting to another. It examines whānau expectations and aspirations for how their Māori language learning will be supported, and the realities that they are experiencing. The study this paper draws from is intended to provide whānau with useful information at the key decision making times associated with educational transitions, assisting them to make education choices that will contribute to achieving their Māori language aspirations.
