As qualitative researchers seeking to understand how youth “construct meaning and to describe what those meanings are” are increasingly called upon to engage purposeful methodological choices, contentious local, state-level, and nation-wide debates turn on notions mandated curriculum standards. We examine how youth across two in-depth, interpretive qualitative research studies use “social participatory youth co-researcher methodologies” to draw upon and extend school-sanctioned literacy practices, complicating static notions of teaching, research, curriculum, and standards. in so doing, we seek to understand ways in which youth co-researchers grapple with and complicate researcher identities in qualitative research.
