Îkakwiy nîhiyawiyân: An Autoethnographic Study of Urban Adult Indigenous Language Learning

Mon, April 7, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Convention Center, Floor: 100 Level, 120B

Abstract

Indigenous languages are endangered around the world. Though increasing efforts are being invested in developing approaches for adult language learners, this area of research remains an emerging part of the Indigenous language revitalization movement in North America. The primary aim of this study was to examine the motivations, processes, effects, and outcomes of a journey into urban adult Indigenous language learning. Through the in-depth examination of one adult’s story, this study contributes to a broader understanding of adult Indigenous language loss and recovery by adding another voice to the too-few stories of adult Indigenous language learning in North America.
