This exploratory case study seeks to illuminate the instructional leadership practices of five school superintendents who are leaders of staff and student learning. The multiple methods research addresses the following general question: In what ways do successful superintendents lead staff and student learning? This research is designed to contribute to the field of system based instructional leadership. We aim to provide insights into various ways to lead learning in high performing, knowledge building school systems for the current century. Since the fall of 2007, there has been a significant push toward evidence-informed district leadership practice in this governmental jurisdiction. We intend that our research will illuminate best practices that can contribute to sustaining this work well into the future.
