The Development of an Instrument to Measure Organizational Communication in Primary Schools

Fri, April 4, 4:05 to 6:05pm, Convention Center, Floor: 100 Level, 102B

Abstract

This paper describes the development of the Organizational Communication in Primary Schools Questionnaire (OCPSQ) as an instrument to measure aspects of school communication among between school leadership and staff and among staff members. Factor analysis was used to identify underlying dimensions of organizational communication in two studies. The OCPSQ was refined for the second study. Using principal axis factor procedures with orthogonal rotation and the criteria of Eigenvalues greater than unity and theoretical interpretability, a ten factor solution was achieved. Reliabilities of each factor (scale) were high in both studies, but improvements in reliability (Cronbach a) were noted in the second. The paper describes the dimensions of communication and their origins and concludes with directions for future development and use.
