An Investigation of Effective Dialogue Patterns in Collaborative Interactions

Mon, April 7, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Terrace IV

Abstract

Two studies were conducted to explore the learning processes in collaborative settings. Specifically, we investigated effective dialogue patterns and verbal moves for productive interactions, and how these interactions are influenced by the instructional materials provided for students to engage. In study 1, engineering students (N = 72) were given an instructional activity and asked to interpret graphs and figures; whereas in study 2 (N = 62) students were given text and asked to generate graphs and figures based on the information in the text. For both studies, we compared the dyads’ performance in collaborative learning condition with students’ performance in solo condition. Results showed while dyads in Study 1 outperformed the individual students, there were no differences in Study 2.
