Surveying Novice Teachers’ Core Competencies: A Survey Development Narrative

Abstract

This paper describes the steps taken in defining and operationalizing novice teacher core competencies for use in a survey distributed to teacher education program staff and graduates in 2012 and 2013. The survey development process is described, and issues encountered (translating standards into survey items; identification of problematic items) are discussed.
