The ubiquitous use of standardized tests prompts the question whether more information can be extracted from their data to support learning and instruction. Diagnostic models can be the answer by decomposing the general ability into cognitive attributes. Due to its complexity, debates on how to break reading comprehension ability into sub-skills exist. This study attempts to apply and validate a well-researched skill profile to a reading section of the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS). The General Diagnostic Model (von Davier, 2005) will be used for analysis. The desirable outcome will be an evidence-based Q-matrix for reading researchers.
