Latina Mothers’ Advocating for Queer Youth in California Schools

Abstract

This paper is a study of a group of Latina mothers who advocate for lgbt youth in schools. The aim of this paper is to gain a better understanding of the role Latina/o parents can and are playing in urban communities in southern California to educate community members on issues related to queer and lgbt communities broadly, and queer and lgbt youth specifically. One question guiding this study is: How have Latina mothers who actively teach on LGBT/Queer issues come to see themselves as agents and advocates of change? Currently in California there is a separation between pro-queer youth policies and community engagement, the goal in this study is to make sense of these disconnects and provide some effective alternatives.
