Ready Child, Ready Family, and Ready School: Examining Family, School, and Child Factors Associated With School Readiness Skills

Abstract

The current investigation examines the readiness of the child, family and school, and their associations with children’s readiness skills, and explores the relative influence of each factor on children’s readiness skills. Four multivariate regression models were conducted as part of preliminary analysis. Results of the regression analysis indicate that 19 factors explained 16% to 35% of the variability for each developmental domain. Age at assessment is the strongest predictor of both language and literacy skills and math skills. Age of child and whether child appeared to be happily engaged in school as two strong predictors of across all developmental competencies. Parent report of children with smoother transition into kindergarten was also important for all developmental competencies.
