Tensions in New Identity: Examining Spaces Between Communities of Practice for Marginalized, Latino English Learners

Sat, April 5, 8:15 to 9:45am, Convention Center, Floor: 200 Level, Hall E

Abstract

In our efforts to capture “at-risk”, minority students and, through our teaching and their learning, to “move them” within an academic pipeline that prepares them for college, we must seek to better understand that movement from personal and academic spaces of “at-risk” and marginalization, to new spaces of learning that influence their identity as students. This study looks at the tensions and complexities that marginalized, middle school English learners experienced in the Advancement Via Individual Determiantion (AVID) program, moving from an academically under-performing place of identity and performance into a program that had new and high expectations in preparation for college.
