Transcultural Literacies: Heritage and Hybridity in the Digital Age

Fri, April 4, 8:15 to 9:45am, Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Terrace IV

Abstract

Questions of heritage, identity, and multiculturalism abound among young people, but research is scarce on how they pursue this learning online, especially ethnic and linguistic minority youth. This paper examines how young people seek out online transnational media for such learning. Global youth interpret Korean culture through their literacy practices on a website devoted to Korean cinema and television. Qualitative data include discussion thread transcripts, multimodal posts by the participants, and images and auditory texts embedded in the site. This research offers a contemporary conceptualization of multicultural education as mediated through digital experiences as well as insights into the complex identity politics youth enact within this connected learning.
